| I am trying to find the best route in southern california. I want to go for a few weeks. I was looking at maybe San Diego to Yuma AZ or down the coast from LA so San Diego and maybe a loop inland. I want to ride in January and camp outside, not at campsites. Anybody gone bike camping by theirselves in the middle of winter in Cali? Thanks |

A few weeks would be long enough to ride from NoCal to SoCal. Ride Hwy 1 and the 101 from Carmel-by-the-sea down to San Diego. A few weeks is more than enough time to ride from LA to San Diego or San Diego to Yuma. Riding the coast might be better than heading east to Yuma. This time of year, the winds can be very strong in the canyons and passes as you head east, and the number of people heading to the sand dunes near El Centro and Yuma in big RVs will be extremely high. Very cool if you've got a toybox and a quad or motorcycle, not so cool if you're on a bicycle.
The camping wild thing, not so sure about that. Especially if you want to head east. Most of the people crossing the border just want a new / better way of life, but there are "coyotes" whom you wouldn't want to run into all by your lonesome. I would recommend some sort of "real" campsite even if you're heading south - there are plenty of places to camp along the coast. Best of luck on your adventure. |
