There has been alot of buzzing lately about the TT course for the 2011 Tour de Murrieta "i.e. Bikes Time Trial". Here are the stats and a preview video:
Friday, March 11th
Starts near downtown Murrieta
Approx. 6.5k
Rolling Terrain with a 1.5k climb
About 2k of the course is on hard packed dirt (including 1/2 the climb).
Riders will not be allowed to return to the start on the race course. Please check the website & Race Bible for alternate route & parking options.

So TT bikes are not recommended? It looks like there will be a lot of slipping and sliding on that dirt and gravel section.

Here's my cat 3 opinion:
* It can be(and has been) ridden on a TT bike
* Rear disc wheel is probably not a good idea.
* You'll gain time on a TT bike on the first 2/3 of the course.
* You'll have to sit up for the climb and the different geometry of a TT bike will make navigating a few of the off camber turns more difficult.
* The last 1.5k of the course is relatively flat but still dirt. You might be able to get aero there but some of the "washboarding" in the road will be a challenge.
* If you fall all your TT bike gains will be lost
You'll have to gauge how much time a TT bike will give you over a road bike with clip-ons. If that's a significant amount it might be worth the risk. |

Here's the youtube video of the TT course:

It looks like the registration for the Cat 5 Omnium (all three events), Circuit , and Crit are sold out. But if you are a Cat 5 you can still do the TT only.

| I rode the course yesterday. This will be a strong man's TT. Start time may add to the difficulty. I had a head wind the entire route at about 10AM. I pitty the fool who uses a TT bike, or a disk or even fancy deep carbon wheels. This course is all about the rider and not equipment. There will be some great stories from this TT. Suffering, washout crashes and a heck of a long ride back to the start/finish. |

True. Typical wind pattern would be a 5-15mph headwind that gets stronger later in the day. The wind yesterday was stronger than normal.
The ride back is 10 miles with a good climb at the start. If you don't want to ride back you can park up top and then use the ride to the start as a warm-up. Leave yourself at least 45min to get to the start to be safe. |
