A very unfortunate loss for our community. He was a great guy that many of us knew, having raced for many of the local teams, CA Pools, La Grange etc. Jorge was great person, a tallented rider, and will be missed.

On April 08, 2010 at 9:52 AM, deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department-Highland Station responded to a collision between a vehicle and a bicyclist on Greenspot Rd. approximately ½ mile east of Santa Ana Canyon Rd. in Highland. When deputies arrived they found that a vehicle being driven northbound Greenspot Rd., lost control, crossed over into the south bound lane and struck a bicyclist that had been riding along the west shoulder of southbound Greenspot Rd. The bicyclist was ejected from the bicycle and came to rest in the open field. Deputies on scene confirmed the death of Jorge Alvarado, a 27 year-old resident of Ontario. Alvarado was a member of the Bahati Foundation Pro Cycling Team and a pro cyclist. The San Bernardino County Sheriff MAIT Team is investigating the incident. [040810 2325 GB]

Even more sad. RIP Jorge

Street racing led to yesterday’s Highland traffic accident that killed a 27-year-old professional bicyclist from Ontario, according to San Bernardino County sheriff’s officials.

Jorge Alvarado died at the scene of the 9:45 a.m. accident along Greenspot Road, about a half-mile east of Santa Ana Canyon Road. Originally from Mexico, he was a member of the newly formed Bahati Foundation Pro Cycling Team, according to the team's web site. The team includes professional Floyd Landis, according to the foundation.

Alvarado was struck by a white 2002 Honda Accord driven by an 18-year-old Highland resident, who had one passenger, and was following two other Hondas, sheriff's investigators said in a written statement. All three cars were occupied by seniors from a local high school.

“The three vehicles were street racing when (the driver) changed lanes to the wrong side of the road as he attempted to pass the vehicle in front of him,” the statement says.

The driver “lost control of his vehicle, causing him to spin out ... on the east side of the road, then traverse both lanes of traffic onto the west side of the road, striking Alvarado.”

No one has been arrested. The investigation is expected to take several weeks, and the reports will be forwarded to the district attorney's office for a decision on what criminal charges, if any, will be filed, sheriff's officials say.

I dont understand how no one was arrested, an accident occurs, during street racing which is illegal, there are apparent grave injuries, and yet this child is not in handcuffs?
I hope that when charges are filed, that they are not only against everyone involved, all three street racers should be charged as contributing, the child and his family should also. I doubt the title of the car is in his name, but mommy and daddy's. I still doubt that going after everyone involved and their families will teach very many around them any respect whatsoever for driving, or anyone else in the community.
