It was another Damn bumpy cross race this past weekend for stops 6 and 7 of the Southern California Prestige Series (SCPS) as Southern California hosted its second UCI Cyclocross race. The events were held at the Hansen Dam recreation area which offered an impressive backdrop for UCI-level racing. This San Fernando Valley location is the home of last year’s first California UCI, C2 cross event. The Hansen Dam Park’s bowl-like features were a perfect setting for plenty of striking racing.

Just over 1 year ago, during a road riding trip to Solvang, Michelle and I stumbled across a special area in the rolling meadows and vineyards. Seconds after thinking that it would be a cool place to do some cross country riding, we discovered that there was in fact a 24 hour race going on at that moment. I could never have imagined that a year later, we would be at that event and riding to win it! Troupe sent a 2 man team to the event of Kevin Akerman and myself. Michelle was our support and as always, she did a great job, but this race was not without a few unique challenges.

Don't miss the UCI Dam Cross Weekend starting Saturday, Nov 8th as the SoCalCross ECO-SPORTFEST makes its second stop at Hansen Dam Park in Los Angeles starting out with a 5k ‘Cross Country Run at 8:00 am. The 'cross 5k course is a mix of pavement, dirt and grass with a couple of race obstacles in between. Runners will do two laps of the course. LA's City Council took time at the end of a long session this past Wednesday to approve a motion directing the reorganization of the Bicycle Advisory Committee, a simple act that demonstrates a new commitment to engaging the cycling community in the process. The motion passed unanimously but that didn't stop debate, albeit one-sided and supportive, with Councilman Ed Reyes taking the lead in addressing the needs of cyclists for support from our Transportation and Planning Departments. It was Reyes who originally moved to reorganize the BAC and it was his office who got involved, attending meetings and offering suggestions on how the process could be more inclusive and open to the public.

The Midnight Express Ride is a fundraiser event for the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition - and in its first year, it is already setting out to be an event like no other. On November 15th, 2008, riders will assemble at Union Station in downtown Los Angeles at midnight - and shortly thereafter, on November 16th, just after the last Gold Line train pulls into the station, the riders will begin an epic journey featuring monumental landscapes bathed in moonlight, routes through towns deep in the arms of sleep, and climbs that will take the riders far above the blanket of lights from the city. The route is 50 miles with over 6300 ft in ascent, overnight in mid-November: an incredible odyssey and experience.

Team Type 1 has announced the signing of promising young Belgian all-arounder Willem Van den Eynde while re-signing Australian Fabio Calabria, who proved to be a valuable stage racer for the first-year professional team in 2008. Both racers have Type 1 diabetes, a chronic, life-threatening disease in which the body’s immune system mistakenly destroys cells that make insulin. 2009 Tour de France Parcours Announced

The 2009 Tour de France parcours was announced earlier today at a presentation in France. The Tour de France will run from July 4th starting in Monaco and will end on the Champs-Élysées in Paris on July 26th. The 96th Tour de France will be made up of 21 stages and will cover a total distance of 3,500 kilometres.

SoCalCross Prestige Series #3 - “Storm the Beach”

The 2008-09 SoCalCross Prestige Series rolled on and so did the surf on the shorelines of Camp Pendleton Marine Base in Oceanside, CA home to Storm the Beach hosted by Celo Pacific cycling club of San Diego. While the weather was perfect, the high tide conditions and sandy course felt more like a 3k run than a cyclocross race. The early morning racers were definitely dealt a better hand as the low tide left plenty of room for riding on the hard packed shoreline sand, but as the day rolled on riders were running out of real estate and deeper into the surf.

After arriving in Vegas at 3:00 am and finally hitting the sheets around 4:00 am we had just enough time to catch a few ZZZZs. We woke up two hours later puffy eyed and ready to go register for the Interbike Outdoor Demo at Bootleg Canyon. We were invited to attend presentations on Cannondale’s 2009 line and Campagnolo’s 11 speed Gruppo. As we picked up our passes at the Sands Convention Center, a lone rider had missed his ride to the Demo, so we happily gave him a lift hoping he would make his group ride.

The race, presented by Celo Pacific, is considered by many to be the "Queen Stage" of the SoCalCross Prestige Series. It is patterned after the famous Duinencross race in Koksijde Belgium and takes place on Camp Pendleton's "Red Beach" where the U.S. Marine Corps practice their amphibious landings. The 2008 UCI Road World Championships continued on Saturday with the elite women’s road race as Amber Neben (Irvine) was the top U.S. finisher in 22nd place. Columbia's Mark Cavendish has won his second stage of Tour of Missouri today in the 200km stage from Clinton to Springfield. Cavendish crossed the line wearing the yellow leaders jersey taking his 16th victory on the road for the season. "My team is just brilliant,"echoed Cavendish after saying the same thing yesterday. "They are so well drilled at this and they controlled the race all day and put me in perfect position for the sprint at the end. Perhaps he got bored with dating Hollywood starlets and hanging out with BFF’s Jake and Matt and is just ready to get back to his roots and live the monk life again. If the motivation and desire is there, then why not?

US Olympic Cyclists, Michael Friedman, Sarah Hammer, Bobby Lea and Jennie Reed are asking for an apology from the United States Olympic Committe after the USOC claimed they offended China for wearing masks in their smoggy air and ordered the cyclists to apologize for their actions. An attorney for the cyclists said the it was "emotionally devastating" and adversely affected their performances at the Beijing Games, where none of them medaled.

The American Mountain Classic presented by Team Sho-Air came to a close on August 24 in Brian Head, UT. By all accounts the four-day stage race was a huge success in its inaugural debut. As a follow up to the team’s announcement released May 2, 2008, when the team stated they were in search of a new Title sponsor for 2009, Team Owner, Sean Tucker, held a conference call earlier today with his riders, staff and management. The Northern California High School Mountain Bike Racing League (NorCal League) will launch the Southern California Interscholastic Cycling League (SoCal League), in the 2009 academic year, with grant support from the Easton Sports Development Foundation II (ESDF II). The Women's Olympic Road Race got underway with light rain that later turned to heavy rain. The course was 126 K, including 75 K of flat terrain and two final circuits with substanial climbing. The race was pretty relaxed for the first half with seven time Olympian Jeannie Longo setting the pace and staying out of trouble on the front. As the rain worsened, a series of attacks and crashes happened on the slick roads.

I'm back from the 24-Hours of Adrenalin World Solo Championships that was contested in Canmore, Alberta this past weekend. While the Australians dominated many of the categories this year, Doug Smith from Gainesville FL and I would make sure that the US was well represented in the 50-54 category. Doug finished 1st with 10 laps in a time of 23h 13m and I placed 2nd completing 10 laps in 24h 44m. This year’s World Solo course was one of the most challenging I've done.

Rock Racing’s Fred Rodriguez finished third Sunday in the Gullo Pro Men Criterium to place fifth overall at the Alexian Brothers Tour of Elk Grove. Rodriguez finished 15th in Friday’s Elk Grove Village Bank & Trust Time Trial and ninth in the Citi Pro Men’s Road Race. Ironfly Retains Lead as Cynergy Cycles Scores Big MCL Points for the Day

Outnumbered by Cynergy Cycles, Ironfly still holds a close lead. Ironfly's Phillips scored the most points possible by one rider in an MCL race as he took both points preems as well as the final win! The competition again was vicious on this challenging, hilly course.

Olympic Send Off / Silent Auction for Amber Neben

Come and bid farewell to Amber as she pepares to leave for Olympic competition. The send off celebration will be an open house to meet Amber and wish her good luck in Beijing, China. Simultaneously, Amber will be hosting a Silent Auction with proceeds to benefit the US Womens Cycling Development Program and also to help Amber to bring family members to Beijing to watch her race in person. Carlos Sastre Wins the 95th Tour de France

Team CSC-Saxo Bank showed why they are the best team in the Tour de France with Spaniard Carlos Sastre winning the overall title and Andy Schleck winning the Best Young Rider Jersey. “This is a dream come true and a realization of all the suffering and sacrifices I’ve made in my career,” said Sastre.

Team CSC-Saxo Bank rider Carlos Sastre all but secured overall victory in the 2008 Tour de France after fending off rivals in Saturday's decisive time trial. Sastre started the stage just over one minute ahead of such dangerous rivals as Cadel Evans and Denis Menchov, but the Spanish climber had the time trial of his life to hold the yellow jersey going into Sunday's final stage into Paris.
